 COLOUR BASICS

1 Look at the image below that shows colour spectrum.
Colour Spectrum is the effect we see when light passes through a prism; the beam of white light is bent and separated into bands of color. The colors of the spectrum always appear in the same order. Can you name the order of the colours in your native language?  In English there is an abbreviation that helps children to remember the colours of the spectrum it’s ROY G BIV. Can you guess what colours does every letter in the abbreviation stand for ? Name the colours of the spectrum.

2 Work in pairs. Let other students guess the name of the colour by saying where it occurs (is situated) in a spectrum.

Use the model:
It's the _______colour.

1st - first
2nd - second
3rd - third
4th - fourth
5th - fifth
6th - sixth
7th -  seventh

3 The colour wheel is an arrangement of colours in a circular format. Watch the video. What types of colours in the colour wheel does the video discuss?  What will happen if they mix all three of these colours together? What colour will you get?

Copy the image given below and open it using Photoshop. Label the types of colours discussed in the video with numbers (write 1 next to colours).

4 Watch the video about secondary colours. How are they made? What are their names? On the colour wheel  in Photoshop label secondary  colours  with numbers  (write 2 next to colours).

Solve the problem and name the colour we will get when we mix:

yellow + blue = ???????     (When we mix yellow and blue we get _____)
yellow + red = ??????        (When we mix yellow and _____we get _____)
red + blue = ???????         (When _____)

5  Watch the video about tertiary colours. How are they made? What are their names? On the colour wheel  in Photoshop label secondary  colours  with numbers  (write 3 next to colours).

In English the name of tertiary colour is important. Remember the information from the video: Do we name first a primary or a secondary colour, for example which name is correct  yellow-range or orange-yellow ?

Solve the problem and name the colour we will get when we mix
orange + red = ????????
 red + violet = ? ????????
 green  blue = ????????
 blue + violet = ????????
 orange + yellow = ????????
 green + yellow = ????????

6 Look at the colour wheel below. Open it using Photoshop and label primary (1), secondary (2), and tertiary (3) colours. Then write the names of the colours (for example red).

7  Look at the alternative names of tertiary colours. Do they have similar names in your native language?

Yellow-Orange = Sandy Tan
Yellow-Green = Iguana Green
Blue-Green = Turquoise
Blue-Violet = Royal Purple
Red-Violet = Raspberry
Red-Orange = Tiger Orange

8 You will get a card with the name of a colour. Don't show it to other students. Find the colour on the colour wheel. Get ready to describe the colour to other students with the help of useful phrases (listen to the model (example)  descriptions of one of the colours before you start).  Describe your colour to other students. Listen carefully to the colour descriptions. Did other students describe colours correctly?

Useful phrases:

1) The name of the colour is __________________
2) _______ is made by mixing ________________ and _________

OR

You get ________________   by buying it at the store.

3) ______ is a ______ colour.

9 Check your knowledge of colours and the rules of their mixing. Play the game

10 Watch the video about properties or characteristics of colours. What characteristics are important for designers and artists?

11 Watch the video again and answer questions:

What is colour value?
What happens to a colour if we add white?
What happens to a colour if we add black?
What is intensity?
What are tint and shade? How are tints and shades produced?
When we talk about colour, what does intensity mean?
What word refers to colour at its maximum intensity?
What term is used when referring to the brightness or dullness of a colour?
